Robin Burdge: Bustin’ Makes Me Feel Worried
On the latest episode of Media Junkyard, I summed up my worries about Ghostbusters 3 into nine words: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Essentially, I am now worried about taking a 20+ year old franchise and giving it a sequel. Even if all the same people are involved. Dan Aykroyd tried this before but without a main cast member. Remember the suckfest that was Blues Brothers 2000? I have a ton of love for the Ghostbusters and my hopes are a little higher ever since old curmudgeon Bill Murray signed on, but all this talk of passing the Proton Packs down to a new younger crew of Ghostbusters has me totally worried.
There is talk of a bunch of Ghostbuster cadets being trained to use new busting tools that allow them to slip into different dimensions. A new crew will be trained by Venkman, Stantz and Spengler who will most likely be from the newest batch of comedic actors and actresses. Now I love Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, and Justin Long in their own movies like Knocked Up and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. But to see them do their schtick in a Ghostbusters movie is going to irritate me to no end.
The Ghostbusters movies were about three guys from the Bronx who stumble into a profession to help save the world. The first one had no one believing them and they saved New York. The second one dismissed them again as hoaxes and they had to prove themselves again. This new one seems to have them as an established business and training padawan Ghostbusters. It just doesn’t work in my mind. And I guarantee they’ll family-friendly-it-up. There will still be snark in it but I’m certain there won’t be any scenes of Ray being pleasured by a ghost in the middle of the night or Peter agreeing that “This man has no dick.”
Finally, it’s just been too damn long since the last GB movie that it’s going to be more like Grumpy Old Men. Maybe if they delivered this sequel in the early nineties, it might have been something cool, but I just know they are bound to screw this up terribly, awesome effects or not.
What say you?

Ghostbusters 1 was the only good one
Aw come on. You gotta love Viggo! A river of slime!
GB2 gets a bad rap, but It really is a good movie. The only problem is the first one is a comedy classic so its hard to compare a good movie to a great one.
I think they should get some little know actors to be the Ghostbusters in training if that is the way they go. Not a lot of CG, one of the best things about GB is the graphics they weren’t the best but at the time they were awesome. And if Shia LaBouf is put in this movie I will never see it. I do not like him, he sucks as an actor.
I have to pretty much agree with Robin but I also kind of like Jessica’s idea of using relative unknowns for the “new class”, if they do choose to move forward with this idea. If they try to use young, but well known comic actors, it just won’t work IMO. There are just some movies that should not be re-done or re-imagined or sequeled (especially 20+ years later).
Am I the only one that liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? I thought is was very entertaining. I would love to see a new GB as well.
Nathan, I liked it too!
yep…didn’t hate on Crystal Skull as much as most people did, don’t get me wrong, it sucked compared to first 3, but it wasn’t AWFUL.
I am worried about ‘busters 3 though. If they bring whats his nuts from pineapple express, I will be pissed. I’m sick and tired of his lame ass character that he plays in EVERY movie. It was funny the first time, but not the 87th.
