Michael David: Leave John & Kate Alone
Somehow a couple from Berks County PA has become fodder for every tabloid in America and the targets of vitriol and loathing. I have heard people and commentators arguing that the Gosselins should have know that this type of paparazzi and media coverage would be the natural consequence of them having a reality show on TLC. Really? Do the Teutels fight off the invasive paparazzi attacks that seem to follow Kate? Is Ami James on TMZ every five minutes like John? It is ridiculous to expect the Gosselins to have had the foresight to predict something that has never happened before.
I must admit I have seen exactly one episode, this year’s season premiere of “John and Kate Plus 8” and have very little knowledge of their personal lives but the attacks on them seem to be out of balance with reality. I realize not everyone would jump at the opportunity to be on a reality show but this was not a show proposed by FOX or VH1, with their over the top “reality shows.” It was TLC. These are parents who saw an opportunity to earn extra income and provide a better life for their children. I doubt either of them, or anyone else for that matter, had the foresight to see that a TLC special would turn into a series and then a media phenomenon. At this point I would opt out of the show at the first opportunity but I do not know their contractual status nor do I know their financial status to make a more informed judgment.
It is very easy to sit on the sidelines and tear these people apart, but sit down and think what you would do to provide for your children. I have no clue how being on TV has affected their children nor do any of you. To judge what is going on in their lives based on 42 minutes of a TV show plus whatever tabloid coverage you read or see is completely unfair. I would like the haters to allow someone take a ten minute snippet of their week and show it to friends or family and allow these people to analyze what is going on in your whole life. I doubt it would be representative of who you truly are. So give John and Kate a break because you really don’t know the whole story.

Both of the parents are too blame. They didn’t focus on the foundation of their family: the marriage. When stuff went wrong they didn’t address it, from what I saw. I have watched the show since the beginning and to see this family self destruct is awful but at the same time Kate is a controling witch and Jon is a push over. He finally spoke up and took a stand and that didn’t fly with her thus upsetting the foundation and the core of this family.
I do feel sad but Jon was right when he said that troops are dying and all we care about is what he is having for lunch? Yes, we are vouyeristic (sp) but seriously who cares. watch the show and leave it at that.
i love to have this lady and love those kidds great to raise them i raised 6 don with love all my life with kidds
Totally agree! Very well said.
Very well put. As much as I want to turn away from the tv I can’t. The whole situation is just so sad. Those poor kids are going to be in therapy someday.
I’ve been watching Jon and Kate plus eight for some time. Their children are so adorable. Jon and Kate have been through some tough times since the children where born, even staying at the Ronald McDonald house at one point. The one hour special was mean to show what a miracle it was that Kate gave birth to SIX babies at once. That was quite something five years ago. The show was meant to document the lives of a big family. I’m sure it also helped allow Kate to quit her job so she could take care of the family while Jon worked. They make quite a bit of money now and have defiantly changed in the last five years. If you watch older episodes where the sextuplets are 2-3 years old, they act much more loving toward each other. These days Kate’s become so Hollywood that’s she has lost that relateableness that she had at the beginning.
I remember one episode where Jon dragged her shopping because all she wore were simple things: t-shirts, jeans, sweats, shorts. He wanted to get her some nice outfits so they could go out together. A few weeks ago, she got on a motorcycle in a short sundress and mega high heels. What happened to Kate Gosslin? I personally feel that Hollywood has gotten the best of her. They own a house now worth 1.1 million dollars. They receive 75,000 per episodes, and at 40 per year, that’s quite the payout.
I just wish they had tried to solve their problems about a year ago. They needed to have some Jon and Kate time away from the kids to keep their marriage and love alive. I’m so sad to see them break up. Honestly though, they should have stopped airing the show before deciding to get divorced. Maybe it would have helped. Well that, and some marriage counseling. Kate has always been bossy and Jon has always been a pushover. Why is it that after ten years he decides to grow a spine?
I just hope that Mady, Cara, Aaden, Collin, Joel, Alexis, Hannah, and Leah can make it through this tough time of losing their dad. I heard he’s looking for an apartment in New York City of all places. Not exactly close to home, but that’s his choice. I think the twins would be okay, but at five it’s going to be rough when Jon just disappears. I hope things work out for the best and that their divorce settlement doesn’t take forever, they have a lot to fight over at this point.
