Sean Olsen: Sean @ the Movies: Transformers 2

So another of the big summer movies has been released, and it’s one of the big ones that I personally have been waiting for. I, like many people my age, was really into the Transformers growing up, either being the toys or the cartoon. So when I heard they were making a Transformers movie, I was super excited. And for me, hearing that Michael Bay was doing it, I was OK with it. I really liked the Bad Boys movies, not so much Pearl Harbor. You go into a Michael Bay movie, with the mind set, that the action is going to be awesome and the story will be not so awesome. So I told you that just to kind of give you my feelings to maybe explain what you are about to read.

So Transformers 2, stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, with appearances by Josh Duhamel and John Turturro. It starts up a few years after Transformers, where we see the Autobots and humans are working together to stop the Decepticons. And after their last attack, they warn the Autobots that the Fallen will rise once again. Sam is leaving his home to go to school and is trying to move on and have a normal life, but that soon changes as he finds a piece of the Allspark. So there you have the basic story to set up the movie, it deals with the history of the Transformers and the humans also, but as stated, I really like to keep these as spoiler free as possible. So what did I think…

I really liked it, it’s a great example of a big summer blockbuster, but in no way is it perfect. For those of you that enjoyed the first movie, I am sure you are going to enjoy this one just as much if not more. There is more of a focus on the giant robots this time and some great fight scenes with the robots. There is also some great comedic moments from both Sam (LaBeouf) and his parents, and also Turturro during the second half of the movie. Also for those of you that are Megan Fox fans, there is plenty of eye candy for you to enjoy. A great moment for me, was the sighting of the Constructicons, who for those are fans of the Transformers know what you get to see in the movie. Now this movie is filled with many of the requirements for a Michael Bay film, quick cuts, slow motion action, giant explosions, low camera angle shots, lots of military weapons, and of course the mandatory, slow motion scene of a character with a slow motion helicopter in the background. So if you are not a fan of Michael Bay, this will not change your mind about him.

So onto the reason why this is not perfect, it’s a little too long, there was about 20 minutes where it kind of dragged the movie down a bit for me. The few references to other movies, a small part seemed a little too much like Species, and on a related note, I think the designer of the robots this time around, are huge HR Giger fans. Also some of the one-liners got a little annoying after awhile. And speaking of annoying, how can I forget about the twins (and I’m not talking about Megan Fox, he-yo). Let’s just say they are kind of offensive, but I’m starting to think people are making a bigger deal about it then they need to. I have seen way more offensive characters in other movies.

So after saying all of that, I would suggest seeing it, but like I said, if you are not a Michael Bay or Transformers fan, this is not a movie for you. But I would like to say one more thing, it’s a big summer movie, or a popcorn movie. One where you go in and just sit and watch the action and not really expect anything too thought provoking. I am a movie fan who appreciates both the independent movies and the big summer blockbusters.

New Trailer Stuff: For those that saw Transformers 2, you got to see the teaser trailer for the new movie, “The Last Airbender”, which is based on the very cool cartoon series that was on Nick. It was a great series and I really hope the movie is just as good.

Also they released the first trailer for the US release of the newest Miyazaki film, called Ponyo. I got to see this movie while I was in Japan, it will be nice to see it and finally be able to understand what they people are saying. My only concern, is that Disney is releasing this movie in the US and their name is all over the credits, but I’m worried the general public will think it’s a Disney movie, when all of Miyazaki films are better than most of the stuff Disney puts out.

Some suggested viewings to go along with this review:

Bad Boys I and II

Hot Fuzz

Avatar: The Last Airbender, the animated series

and of course just a few of my favorite Miyazaki films, Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro

And here are a few possible movies that I hope to see and review in the next few weeks: Away We Go, Ice Age 3D, Year One and The Proposal.

So until next time, go out and see a movie

    Ok,

The credits started to roll, i turned to my friend and said. “That was sooo Stupid!, But i love it!!” I like and hated it at the same time. But really, are you going to expect much out of story or plot out of this? No, you’re going to see action with eye candy. It’s not suppose to win an oscar or be on the critic’s top ten movie lists of all time. It’s suppose to be a summer blockbuster with all the explosions, hot girls, fast cars, and robots. It’s the formula and if you’re going into this movie with having it be another ‘Forest Gump’ Masterpiece, then you will be disappointed. Just expect to have your senses overloaded and you’d better wear a big adult diaper to because Transformer’s isn’t suppose to make any sense, it’s suppose to be a summer blockbuster.

    Go see it for that.

i actually did not like the movie. i thought it was entirely too long for what it was. and suprisingly, it was very boring. i actually fell asleep during one of the bigger action scenes. it will make money but i do think michael bay NEEDS a failure so a studio will ring him in so he can make better, more efficent movies.

so i really should have done a better job proofreading my review, it’s called the allspark, not the ultraspark

This movie was complete garbage. I’m ok with turning my brain off for a blockbuster, but you need to turn it off, extract it from your skull and chuck it down an alleyway to get any enjoyment out of this thing. Poorly paced, over bloated, and a script written by a third grader make this blockbuster an insult to movies in general. I hope the folks that paid extra for IMAX enjoyed that extreme close-up of John Turturro’s pimply ass. I hope I didn’t spoil that gem of a moment for anyone.

    Don’t see this movie.

It’s funny, because I liked the move. thought it was too long but still really enjoyed learning the mythology behind the Transformers, since I didn’t watch a whole lot of it as a kid. Also, we saw it at midnight so we didn’t read any reviews beforehand and went in 100% unbias. I wonder if those played any factors at all. I don’t love every movie I see or even like every movie I see, but I did enjoy Transformers 2 a lot. For any of you reading this, why didn’t everyone seem to like it? Like, specifically?

I think I can come up with ten, no fifteen reasons why.

    SPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERS
    1. Ok, there’s a Robot Heaven now?
    2. “I am standing directly beneath the enemy’s scrotum.”
    3. Skids and Mudflaps - If you don’t accept that they are completely racist caricatures, you can at least admit that they are annoying as hell.
    4. The mini robot humping Megan Fox’s leg. Megan looks down affectionately.
    5. John Turturro’s bare buttocks.
    6. The Decepticon is old so he needs an Transformer cane.
    7. The Beef’s mom freaking out on pot brownies and jumping on some random kid for no reason.
    8. Why is it that the robots have such foul mouths and talk in different stereotypically ethnic accents if they’re from outer space?
    9. Why does the roommate have to come along? Oh yeah, because with Skids, Mudflaps, John Turturro, and the mini-Decepticon, there isn’t enough comic relief in this movie.
    10. Why did we need to get a shot of the dogs boning at the beginning?
    11. Soundwave attaches itself to a satellite. The humans then begin to tell every single one of their military secrets as if they were waiting for it.
    12. They taser the roommate to shut him up in Egypt. Two minutes later, the car pulls over and he steps out, totally ok and not preturbed at all about the tasing.
    13. A piece of the All Spark was used to revive Megatron, why couldn’t the piece that Sam had be used on Optimus? Why did we need to get the Matrix to do it?
    14. Speaking of the All-Spark, why are the symbols that Sam gets and that the Decepticons need to find the Fallen only located on Sam’s piece of the All-Spark and not on the one that the Decepticons steal from the military?
    15. Michael Bay got all up in arms earlier this year that there was giant robots in McG’s Terminator film. What does Michael Bay have in his film? Oh yeah, a robot that looks like a human.
    SPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERS

No offense to those who liked this, but I’m not one to settle for the “Hey, it had giant robots fighting so I was happy. Turn your brain off.” argument. There are plenty of blockbusters that have had a great script attached to it. Hello, Dark Knight? Whatever happened to that quality of blockbuster? I didn’t hear from the audience “Hey, it had Batman and the Joker. It was good enough for me. Turn your brain off.”

    Sorry. Rant over. lol :)
