Nathan Fillion at the Browncoats Meeting at Comic Con 2009: Joseph Curley

4 August 2009 2 Comments

I want to first off just say that Comic Con 2009 was absolutely amazing! It was my first time there and I had no idea what to expect. (Although Jay, Jack, and Colleen’s Guide to Comic Con video on Nudia.tv did help tremendously.)

Now as for the Browncoats meeting, I didn’t exactly know what that entailed either.  The description in the Comic Con guide said that fans of Firefly and Serenity were welcome to join the California Browncoats and I knew for sure I was a huge fan so there was no way I was missing this meeting.  I arrived there a few minutes early and they were handing out tickets for a trivia game they were gonna play.  There were maybe over 100 people there and every seat was taken.  It was the same room as the Jay and Jack panel that held a modest amount of people.

The meeting consisted of members of the fan group talking about their upcoming plans and a representative from Dark Horse Comics was there to talk about some upcoming Firefly comics. They even had the costume designer, Shawna Trpcic (pronounced terp-sick) there for a Q & A session.

But the highlight of the meeting (and perhaps my Comic Con experience, save for the LOST panel) was turning around in my seat and seeing Malcolm Reynolds aka Nathan Fillion just standing in the back like a member of the audience in sunglasses trying to be incognito.  Of course once everyone realized he was there, massive cheering and applause ensued. He quickly walked up to the podium for a Q & A which would last a little over an hour.

I was very pleasantly surprised about how upbeat and cheerful his demeanor was.  Cracking jokes left and right, he was an absolute delight to watch and listen to.  Very classy and eloquent.  I was also surprised about how in shape he was.  I mean, damn,  have you seen his arms?  Those are good arms to have. vBut I digress.  He answered many questions about his experiences on the show, what it meant to him, and how happy he was to bring some closure to his role with Serenity. His projects voicing certain video game characters was also discussed as well as some information about his new show Castle. The main reason he was there though was to raise awareness for The Waterkeeper Alliance - an environmental organization committed to cleaning up dirty water around the world.

We never did get around to playing that trivia game but the tickets that were handed out guaranteed us a place in the front of the line for Nathan’s autograph session.

Overall I’d say it was quite the surreal experience.

I was so thrilled that Nathan went to Comic-Con to show his support and interest in Wsterkeeper Alliance. I am a Trustee for WKA and had been working with James Riley for a few years to see if the California Browncoats would consider Waterkeeper Alliance as their charity to support at Comic-COn. James is THE most helpful, enthusiastic, generous person when it comes to supporting great causes. Mathan and so many others from Firefly, particularly Jewel and Morena, have really helped us introduce Waterkeeper Alliance to a younger, motivateted, thoughtful, interested and interesting group of people. Nathan skied for us in our Celebrity Sports Invitational a few years ago, played poker against Alec Baldwin, Alyson Hannigan, Joe Pantileon and a few others for us (Alicia Silverstone beat him out… but it’s the thought that counts) and has been open to other ways in which to promote the work of the 200 Waterkeepers around the world. The Joss Whedon family of actors, be it from Firefly, Buffy, Angel or Dollhouse have made such a difference for us. We are so grateful to have their support. We were thrilled to be the chosen charity at the Sc Cal Brownscoasts booth this year!! You Browncoats are amazing. You make things happen. You are the best examples of using fandom to create something bigger than just the great fun and commraderie of supporting a show and it’s createive team. I think that’s why the actors and Joss and all the other creative forces that made Firefly/Serenity support your group so much each year. You are always doing the impossible and making it look fun and easy. COngratulations on an amazing Comic-Con. I’m forever your fan. Karen Lehner
