The I’m retired-not-retired-retired-OK I miss football former Packer Brett Favre is at it again. He shows up to talk to people in of all places, Minnesota. Does anyone really care about this guy anymore? He’s going from great football QB to a joke of an old player. Maybe he SHOULD go to the Vikings. It will make for GREAT TV when he shows up on the Great Tundra of Green Bay in a Vikings uniform. Cheeseheads won’t be happy

Listen, I’m not necessarily defending the guy, but he wanted to play for Minnesota last year. The Packers vetoed the trade, so he went to the Jets (where there were all sorts of restrictions on how they could deal with him written into the contract). I have a feeling all along his plan was to “retire” again and then get signed by the Vikings, but then he got hurt. He decided maybe retiring for real was the right move. Now, he misses it again. Can’t say I blame him for that.
Granted, he should be making up his damned mind a HELL of a lot sooner than after the first preseason game, but, hey, we’ve all had times when we’re not sure whether what we want is actually what’s best for us. So I get it. I just hate to think that Favre is ruining his legacy with all this back and forth nonsense. And he is. Instead of being a super-human field general, we’re seeing him as a flawed human being that can’t make up his mind. I’m not necessarily sure which is better and which is worse, but all I know is I completely understand where he’s coming from.
Oh, and as far as being as joke? He’s still better than at least 1/3 of the quarterbacks in the league. Including Tavares Jackson, whom he would replace on the Vikings depth chart. It isn’t Favre’s physical ability that is in question here, but his morality and decision making. And it’s always disappointing when one of our heroes turns out to be a completely flawed individual, isn’t it?
Well as a Packer fan, and formally Brett Favre fan, it’s getting ridiculous that he has to act like a drama queen. Wisconsin worshiped him, we loved him. We supported him through everything, the drug problem, the death of his father, and stood by him when he kept doing the retire/not retired dance for the last 6-7 years. We cheered him on when he had his best games and still cared about him when he played his worst. We had him for so long, he was ours. Even when he got into the whole with Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy most people stood by him. We wanted him back for one more season. Even when he put on the Jets uniform people still stood by him, lots of people in Wisconsin bought the Jets 4 jersey. When he did say a few weeks ago he would not play with the Vikings, it was a relief for people in the state. We would forget he played for the Jets. Just like no one remembers that Jerry Rice played for the Raiders or Joe Montana played for the Chiefs? People only think of them as 49ers. But they played again because they wanted to play. If Favre was doing this just to play I don’t think it would be such a big deal. But since he is doing this out of spite for Thompson and McCarthy, it’s really in bad form. Knowing how much Packer fans hate the Vikings it’s a smack in the face to all of us that stood by him for everything. I can’t wait for that first game, because Packers are just going to pummel him.
I simply enjoy watching the guy play football. I don’t care for who. Hell, I wish I could play so how’s a guy that has done it for his entire life simply stop? If a team is willing to hire him then fine by me. Oh yeah - Go Steelers!!
I guess, ultimately, it’s up to Favre to decide what’s best for him, but I sure wish I could retire and un-retired everytime I felt like it!
Joe has a good point. These “heroes” we create are just regular people. They make mistakes and are flawed.
Because of all of this, I have rethought what it means to be a fan. Why should whether or not a team wins or loses affect me? Why should I get so upset about who plays for what team? Many former players say it really isn’t a big deal that Favre is going to the Vikings. Yes, Packers fans gave a lot of support to Brett Favre, but we also have to remember that he also played through a lot of pain for the fans, the organization, and for himself too. One thing to remember is that the Packers didn’t want him anymore. What was he supposed to do at that point? Just stay retired? He wanted to play, so he should be able to go to another team that wants him.
I will say that I wanted Brett to stay retired the first time. When he became a Jet, I hoped he would do well. I really didn’t want him to become a Viking. If he is doing this for the wrong reason (to stick it to the Packers’ GM Ted Thompson), I can’t support him. Personally, I think that has a little bit to do with it, but the main reason is to try and win a SB. I am sure that he thinks this Vikings team is one that could make a push and he wants to go out on top.
In the end, if you feel very upset over this, just try and keep it in perspective. It really doesn’t affect you or your life. Also, you can still cheer on the Packers the way you were going to anyway this year.
The guy from There’s Something About Mary plays football???
hated the guy for the past 10-15 years, glad the rest of the country is finally come along.
He’s making a fool of himself with this “I’m going to retire..oh wait, maybe I’m not, or maybe I am…okay, I’m not retired…for now” routine. Of course, the first bad pass he throws, he can blame on the surgery, out of practice, etc. It will be interesting to see if he hangs on for the whole season or decides to retire yet again.
Brett Favre is dead to me as anything but a Packer. I stopped wearing my #4 jersey when he played for the Jets and started wearing it again when he retired (again). And when he retires the next time, I’ll start wearing it again. I don’t know what really happened between him and the Packers - I know people who all swear they know the truth come out with different stories. Unless he takes another team to the Super Bowl, I think everyone will eventually forget the non-Packer years.
I do wish he could have gotten MVP the year he won the Super Bowl though. That’s the only achievement he’s really missing and I wonder if it hurts. How many people even remember the name of the guy that got Super Bowl MVP that year?
BJ: It was Desmond Howard. He returned two kicks for touchdowns and was the first special teamer to win the award. Matter of fact, he deserved it, too. Favre played well, but without those TD’s the game was tied.
Just, you know, answering your question. At least one.
I have nothing really to say except that I find it funny that Brett Favre has played for all 3 of the favorite teams in my family (Packers - my cousin, Jets - my uncle, and Vikings - my dad). I guess he’s making his rounds through my family.
We really don’t know these guys no matter what public persona they portray. If Favre wants to stumble to the end of his completely overrated career that is his perogative. People generally don’t remember the end of great players careers, a lot of them have held on with teams after the were no longer able to perform.
But why does he have to wear purple???? I saw the press conference with his name in purple and it was the ugliest thing I have ever seen.
Stupid Vikings
I’m sick to death of these old jocks who don’t seem to know what the word “retire” really is supposed to mean. Give it up, already! Sheesh.
I don’t care about old jocks in general who don’t know when to retire. Why should they, if a team is willing to pay them to stay in? I care more about folks like doctors and teachers who don’t know when to retire….I only care about Favre because it’s personal for some Packer fans like me and because I have my one little share in Packers stock
