The Day OctoMom Becomes Irrelevant: James Gordon
So I doubt there are many around these here blogs that do not know of Nadya Suleman. Don’t recognise the name you say? What about if I give her the name you’ll know her by: Octomom. Ah there we go, I can almost see the realisation dawn on your face.
Mrs Suleman had octoplets (Like twins but with 8 children for those who can’t do math-speak), using IVF treatment, at great personal risk to herself and the children. She already had 6 kids, and this was seen largely as a publicity stunt by many - it worked, it got her all over international news, with a huge reality show deal to follow.
Whatever your opinions on her, (personally I think she is a horrible, glory seeking woman who deserves whatever troubles come to her) Octomom is a celebrity in her own right.
But not for much longer. UK Tabloids The Sun and The Mail, are both today reporting that a woman in Tunisia is expecting an unprecedented Duodecatuplet birth. Thats 12 babies. 6 boys, 6 girls. The woman has miscarried mulitple times before and so has turned to IVF, and is now having these children in approximately a months time.
Now here is the debate: Why is this not illegal? The chances of all of these babies surviving to term is minimal, and there are huge risks to the mother - her likelihood of survival is low, as is that of the children.
Doctors have come out and said that it is feasible that a duodectuplet birth could occur, but that it is highly unlikely, and that it is clearly an extremely dangerous procedure.
Should there be a rule that too many is too many? Octomom has already proved that looking after 8 is damn near impossible, and that the media is all over them all the time.
Is there a stage at which someone has to step in and look out for the quality of life of these potential children, and say that it is simply not fair for these mothers to be forcing such ridiculous amounts of children into the world at one time, as it is clearly having an adverse affect on all involved.
So on a day when Octomom ceases to be important almost, in which Duodecamom (despite her birth still being a month away) takes the spotlight, I have to ask: Where is it all going to stop?

I heard they don’t speak English but they’re already practicing how to say “reality show”
I think whatever the reason, if a woman deliberately chooses to have that many children, there is an element of selfishness that borders on obsession. I don’t agree with aborting the babies if a woman is not expecting 6 or 8 or however many she gives birth too. However, when the number of children born at one time becomes not only a risk to the mother but to them (especially if the mother does not have the means to take care of them on her own), a little common sense should prevail. This common sense should first be used when the woman starts IVF treatments, if that is what she does. Most women trust their doctors when it comes to this, and some doctors don’t use common sense either. What gets me is if a mother reasons that she will always get help for her children because of how they came about, or if her back-up plan is to become a reality TV star, that’s where the selfishness reaches a new low.
Also, it’s kinda interesting that this woman is due next month…so 9 months after OctoMom had her babies. Coincidence or another quest for attention at the expense of taxpayers and children?
This woman, gives women a bad name! How dare she expect to simply get famous and live off those children, also shame on the media for letting her !
Unfortunately, the media - especially those tabloid type shows - doesn’t see itself as a participant in these kind of situations. It’s news, they report it. But they, in a way, determine what news we see, and also what can “inspire” some women to copy others just for the attention or money. That said, almost all of the responsiblity for these situations lies with the woman involved, along with her health care provider.
She’s obviously unstable but unfortunately mental competence is not a requirement for having children ie Sarah Palin, Gweneth Paltrow and Britney Spears.
It’s amazing. Most humane societies require a background check to adopt a dog or cat. But any idiot can have a child. It’s really sad.
turns out that woman is severely disturbed and shows no signs of actually being pregnant, though she insists that she’s carrying 12 children!
Okay this woman has already said she regrets what she did but how long do we pay for childcare? I think at some point she should be responsible to her own childcare as she is out getting her nails done ect.. Nadia clearly has mental illness and feel sorry for her children. I do believe she loves the children but how can you take care of all 14 children. Her older 6 kids are bad! They curse and hit the mother. The will end up in Jail or on the streets without a doubt.
she only has 2 hands not enough attention to go around for those kids. I pitty her and the children. I think she should tell the world who the father is as he needs to pay for these kids. Not you and me
i think shes mentaly ill you can tell shes not all there but u know what its her life and her dicision what she does with it back in the day woman had lots of kids not all at once but they did so its not anything unnatural
hey tell octo mom i said hi
