A First Look at ‘Avatar’ and ‘The Wolfman’: Robin Burdge

21 August 2009 11 Comments

A couple of new trailers came out yesterday that got me excited to go back to the movies again.  This comes on the heels of a great time I had watching District 9, which I think is a great example of marketing a movie. They gave us a trailer that showed us a sneak peek into the world of the movie, but didn’t spell it out for you, which resulted in me being on the edge of my seat for the last hour. They kept things super-secret, but the result turned out to be a great movie.

The marketing behind Avatar has been kept super-secret as well.  James Cameron has been working on this opus for three years now, and all that’s been revealed is that it will be an epic tale with an alien world, and it will revolutionize CGI animation and 3D movie-making. The promotion machine behind this has been firing up since it was previewed at Comic-Con and, just a few days ago, gave tickets away for a preview screening of twenty minutes of footage. Can you think of any other movie that has stirred this much hype up?

I have been excited because this is the first movie Cameron has directed since Titanic, and say what you will about that movie; its special effects were pretty amazing. And, of course, James Cameron brought us Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens and The Abyss, all excellent films, and revolutionary in their own right. Today, James Cameron has pulled back the curtain a bit and shown us the world that Avatar is going to be bringing us to on December 18th. What do you think?

The other trailer that got me excited was for Joe Johnson’s The Wolfman. It stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Agent Smith, I mean Hugo Weaving. It’s coming out in February 2010. This movie looks so good to me.  I love the classic monster movie look to it. It could scare some people away, because it resembles some other attempts at making CGI work for stories that take place in Victorian times, such as Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But I can tell you the exact moment this trailer sold me. “I will kill you all!” Check it out and, again, let us know what you think!

Maybe it’s just me, but the effects on Avatar in the trailer just don’t blow me away. It doesn’t look like anything we didn’t see in the Lord of the Rings, honestly.

Yeah, I’ve heard that it looks a LOT better on the big screen. However, I’m still intrigued! I just worry about watching these things act!

I really liked the trailer for The Wolfman better. It looks really fascinating. I’m not a del Toro fan, but I might become one after this movie.
