Sean @ Comic Con Friday: Sean Olsen
So when we last left the story, I have had two great days of Comic Con and that was even before I hit Friday and Saturday, the two busiest days of the Con. And Friday would be the day I would finally check out the famous Hall H.
So Friday morning, I wake up, grab my things and meet up with John, Matt, Katie and Steve. We head off to the line for Hall H. It was actually not that bad, but Steve got a hold of one of the TRS guys and we got in line with them. While we were waiting in line with met up with the two folks from geeks of doom and then Peter from /film. So let’s just say there were some interesting conversations. I think we got in line around 8:30 and where in the hall by like 9:30, so not too bad; I was expecting it to be much worse. We got seats towards the back, really didn’t need to rush to get great seats in the front, due to the screens they have throughout the hall. So the first panel of the day, was Warner Brothers. First up was Where the Wild Things Are, a movie I was excited to see even before the Con. And after seeing about 15-20 minutes of footage, I really can’t wait to see this movie, this is going to be a very good movie. Spike Jonze did an amazing job and really brings the world to life in front of your eyes. The music is amazing, but if you saw the first trailer, you get a good idea of what the music is going to be like. A great quote from this panel: The boy who plays Max came out and said that Maurice Sendak said that if you don’t like this movie, you can go to hell. He is totally on board for what Jonze did and gives his praise of the movie.
Next up, was the Book of Eli. I had no idea what this movie was about going in, and the first thing they showed was a motion comic that gives us the origin of one of the characters. Still no interest in seeing this movie. So then they show the trailer, it’s another post-apocalyptic movie, starring Denzel Washington, Mila Kunis and Gary Oldman. Ok the cast has me somewhat interested. Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors (his performance in The Professional or Leon, was amazing).
The Nightmare on Elm Street was next, I was interested in this movie going in, due to the fact that Jackie Earle Haley is playing Freddy Krueger. We got to see the first trailer for the movie, and I jumped a few times just in the trailer, so I think they did a great job and I think this will be much better than the Friday the 13th remake that just came out.
Richard Kelly’s (the guy that brought us Donnie Darko) new film, The Box was next up. Now the premise of the movie is very interesting. A man leaves a box at your front door, shows up and tells you that he will give you a million dollars (it’s set in the 70’s) if you push the button, which will cause someone you don’t know to die. So the movie deals with the moral dilema with their decision. I think all of Hollywood learned a very important lesson. If Cameron Diaz is in your movie, do not let her talk about the movie; she gave away the twist in the movie. If you could see the look on Richard’s face…priceless.
Jonah Hex, the movie based on a comic book series starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, was up next. So to make most of us fanboys go crazy, Megan Fox shows up, and yes folks, she is still hot in person. The only thing bad about it, was all of the questions that were asked, were all for her and Josh Brolin was getting pissed off and was really going after people. At first your were like, what an ass, but after awhile you were on his side. They showed the red band trailer, and it looks interesting, and I am sure I will check it out, just for seeing Megan Fox in a movie.
And to end the panel, Robert Downey Jr, comes out and wows the crowd and shows us a new trailer for Sherlock Holmes. This is a movie I was so-so about seeing, but I am a little more interested in seeing now. There were a few shots of special effects that looked too CG so hopefully they can clean them up before the movie comes out. This was Downey Jr’s Con; he had both Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man 2 to show off.
So next up was one of the big panels I was really excited for, was the Disney/Pixar panel. Me being a huge Pixar fanboy, I would have felt really bad missing this. John Lasseter hosted the panel, and we got to see the beginning of Toy Story 2 in 3D, then the first 3D trailer for the Toy Story Double Feature (1+2 in 3D) coming out in October. They also announced that Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton) will make an appearance in the new Toy Story 3, and we got to see an interview from the 70’s, which was hilarous. So after seeing all of that, the Pixar fanboy in me was really happy. But Disney then showed us the beginning of Beauty and the Beast in 3D, which is going to be released on Valentine’s Day 2010. I have to say, it looked bad and I really hope it doesn’t do well because, I am afraid that if it does well, they are gonna try and milk the 3D and re-release all of their movies. So one of the big things that Lasseter wanted to do when he got back to Disney is to get back into them doing hand-drawn movies, so they showed us a few scenes from the Princess and the Frog, which was ok, but they made a very bad mistake by showing footage of Miyazaki’s Ponyo right after that. The Ponyo footage was 10 times better than the Disney stuff. Plus it was awesome to sit and listen to Lasseter and Miyazaki talk about the creative process of his movies. It was kind of weird because we would have to wait for an someone to translate what he said. But it was so worth it. I talked to a few people about how I am worried the fact that Disney is attaching their name to this movie, and most people will think it’s a Disney movie, but Miyazaki’s stuff is far superior to most Disney stuff.
So after two great panels, John, Matt, Steve, Se Young, Katie, Hannah and I headed off to get some food. We ended up at Bar Basic, and got a few of their great pizzas and salad. After that, a smaller group of us headed off to room 7ab to start getting in line for the big TRS live show later that night. We ended up sitting through a Jericho comic book presentation, and a very interesting panel with Michael Uslan (the guy who owns the rights to the Batman movies). It was interesting to hear how difficult it was to get a Batman movie made back then, considering the success of the last two films made. He ended the panel with a great quote saying that us comic book fans won, some of the best grossing movies last year were comic book related movies, and that we are no longer the outcasts. We can be proud to be fans of comic books.
So after that was the big TRS live show, one of the main reasons I came to comic con. We had a good time at the show and got to hear about some of the stuff we missed at various panels. If you are interested you can watch the show (go to www.totallyradshow.com and watch the episode called “Tronverse”, and you can see me a few times during the show and the little clips at the end. After that we headed to the after party at Tivoli, but some of the people were under 21 so we just hung around outside the place and talked to all of the TRS guys and Mikey. While we were waiting I did see a few of the people from the online series, The Guild. Bladezz was on the phone and Clara got dropped off and headed right into the bar. But I happen to notice Felicia Day and asked her if I could get a quick picture with her. She was very cool and took a picture with me and then a group picture with the rest of the rest of the TRS forum crew. So after awhile we headed off to grab a bite to eat and ended up sitting around and talking for some time.
So around 1am or so we headed back and I was going to meet up with the Nudia.tv crew to camp out overnight in line for the Lost panel in Hall h the next day. I headed over around 1:30am and I walked up and down the line and did not see anyone. So I decided to just head back to my uncle’s for a few hours of sleep. I did end up walking by Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet from Lost), she looked like she just got out of a party and just wanted to go home, so I didn’t say anything. A funny end to this story, I got home and checked twitter and aparently I just missed Jack, he ended up going down to camp out a little after I had left, doh!
So there you go, the very long and fun friday at comic con. The overall greatness of the con has continued.
