Discussion: FlashForward Series Premiere

24 September 2009 18 Comments

flashforward-posterABC’s newest series, FlashForward premiere tonight.  We’d like everyone’s thoughts and comments on it.  Has anyone read the book it’s based on (by Robert J. Sawyer)?  I did and loved it.  I also really enjoyed the premiere, even though it was absolutely nothing like the book.  Thoughts on the premiere and where the show will go?

And of course, the elephant-in-the-room-question-of-the-day:  Will FlashForward be a good enough replacement for our precious Lost once May 2010 has come and gone?

Lets wait and see if it is good enough personally I think the creators definitely need to promise they have an end game, after lost (which I believe does have an end game) I will never get into a show that does not have a definite ending and a set number of seasons

I don’t think anything will ever replace Lost. Because Lost is a show that will always have a special spot in my heart. But I really think this show will help ease in our good-byes to Lost. However I really liked this show. And I’m looking forward to the journey along with it. So who is the guy in black? Well we know it can’t be Dominic he was too short, and it wasn’t his walk. lol.

How much of the book is in the first episode. I haven’t read the book yet. I want to read it, but does it spoil much of the show?

I agree with Michael I think it’s to soon to know if it’s going to be the replacement for Lost but I do think it’s one of the best pilots since Lost.

It is way to early to say it will replace Lost. The episode started off slow. The opening scene was not as intense as lost but nice special effects. The lost reference’s were annoying me and reminded me of Heroes.

The producer’s explained in a chat after the show that the Lost reference’s were planned and they had even talked to Darlton about the shout out’s to them. What sold the show for me was the last 25 minutes and the ending was wild. Who is the man in black who didn’t black out? I give it an 8 out of 10.

I like the show a lot. I thought the opening was very very reminiscent of the opening of Lost.I loved the Oceanic Airlines Billboard. Overall a very good show.

I thought Flash Forward episode 1 was great. I didn’t really like the Lost references, since it seems kind of pointless, but by the end of the show I was really into it and looking forward to what happens next. It has a long way to go to become my Lost replacement, but I think it’s off to a good start.

I was very annoyed at how ABC promoted this show. “From the network that brought you Lost!” Not the creators, or the writers, just the network…it could just as easily have been “From the network that brought you Super Nanny!” Then within the first 20 minutes they had an Oceanic Airlines billboard and a Desperate Housewives ad on the side of a bus. ABC was loading this show with product placement for its other shows…ugh.

If the premise for the show hadn’t been so intriguing, I would have avoided this show simply because of how blatantly in your face they were pushing this show on Lost fans like me.

Fortunately, I found the show really picked up steam in the second half and easily stands on its own merits. Great concept, good cast and a very interesting mystery to work on.

And at least I can look at the Seth MacFarlane appearance as product placement for the FOX Sunday night lineup… :)

I don;t think it will replace Lost but it has started how great, I didn’t think the show started out slow at all. What is it with the kangeroos?

1st I want to start with I am a big fan of the book. Its is different and that can be a good thing. I liked it it has promise. I didnt like that they changed that not everyone blacked out. I like that they had Lloyd in the show. I am a BIG BIG BIG fan of LOST so I can never say it can replace LOST but no show will ever have what LOST has so lets stop that now. I did see a lot of LOST easter eggs. Is the kangaroo their polar bear?

After watching FlashForward I think I know what happens if Desmond dosen’t puch the button in the hatch!

I really liked the premiere and am looking forward to seeing where they go with it. The one guy (so far) who they saw walking around when everybody else was blacked out is intriguing. My only concern is how the show will be able to go more than one season since I’m thinking they’ll get to the date in the flashes this season. I guess maybe they can spend future seasons still trying to figure out WHAT caused the flashes. Either way, they’ve got me hooked. Although somehow I missed the Oceanic billboard. Guess I’ll be going back to watch it again and look for that…and any other easter eggs I might have missed.

I seem to be the only one who was really hyped after seeing the episode. I came to the pilot with big expectations and wasn’t disappointed. Sure I agree it opened slow, but like everyone else said it did really pick up steam. The one problem I am having with it is everyone is trying to compare it to LOST. Why? Ok I know I love LOST as much as all of you and its similar in the mystery aspect of it, but I find no point in comparing the two. Comparing them will just let you down. Its the same as people comparing Fringe to X-Files. Sure they are similar but not the same. So I ask you guys to watch it again, this time don’t compare it to LOST instead judge it on its own merit.

P.S. Does anyone else think every time some one types the word LOST it should be in bold and a different color so you spot it right away?

In the first half of the ep I couldn’t get into it. It was too compressed. I couldn’t accept it the way it all happened. Too fast and too easy. The poor dubbing and the useless Lost references didn’t help matters. They should have gone for a two parter I think.

But in the second half I could see through that. I still didn’t get into it but I could see the potential. I’m going to watch this series.

I think I’m going to be in the minority by the seems of these comments but: This episode actually hugely exceeded my expectations.

Don’t get me wrong I expected this show to be good, but I honestly thought it was awesome.

So the Oceanic billboard was a little much, but otherwise, as Michael says: forget LOST. This isnt Lost, and really can’t be compared, its a totally different style of show. Lost was all about the mystery, this really isn’t. This is about how we get to the point we all already know happens. Its not about what the light at the end of the tunnel is but about how to get through the tunnel.

I was hooked from the get-go, and by the end, my mouth was practically dragging along the floor.

Who is that man?? Why wasnt he asleep???

My crackpot theory: Bernard, working for DHARMA on a covert mission to blackout the world. Ok, just kididng…its all you guys trying to relate it to LOST after all =P

I cannot wait for next week, and I can’t wait to listen to Jay and Jack’s FlashforwardCast (which I will do later when I get a chance)

I agree that it was a bit slow, but if it were a two hour premiere or a two parter, it would have been slower. I think it has an interesting premise and I do like. My only concern is not that we’re comparing it to Lost but that they’re comparing it to Lost.

This show is being hailed as the next replacement to Lost that I’m afraid that the writers and producers are going to try to hard to make it like Lost in a way. I understand trying to bring in Lost fans. Ok, they’ve done that for the first ep. Now it’s time to be a new show with new ideas and not worry about trying to walk in the footsteps of other shows.

Otherwise Flash Forward will be going the Heroes direction quick and to cancellation even quicker.

  • Michael said:

I am probably in the minority here, having never watched Lost (sharp intake of breath). Yeah, I don’t watch much TV because I work nights, but I was home sick for the pilot and loved every moment of it. I’m looking forward to discussing the show here with y’all.

Hey Mike,at least there will be one person not comparing it.
