To Glee or Not to Glee: Robin Burdge

I am at constant war with myself when I watch Glee. Five episodes in, I cannot tell if I like it or I hate it! Maybe you guys can help me out. Am I a “Gleek”? Or should I change the channel? Let me list my pros and cons of Glee.
Pros:
Jane Lynch - Ridiculous and hilarious, she makes me love and hate Sue Sylvester with a passion.
Jayma Mays - I just think she is so quirky and adorable, her huge brown eyes win me over. She’s also one of the best parts of Paul Blart: Mall Cop IMHO.
Lea Michelle - Incredibly talented, maybe it’s the swirling cameras, but when she sings, the show goes from ho-hum to bursting crescendo. For example, when they cut to her singing Celine Dion last week, she made a Celine Dion song sound so awesome. And I’m a dude!
Mark Salling - The recent plot development turning him from bullying cougarbait to an empathetic character was seamless and believable.
Jessalyn Gilsig – She is so funny. Up until she found out she wasn’t really pregnant, I loved how much she was such a spoiled brat. “But Will, I’m on my feet four hours a day, three times a week here. Now I have to go home and cook dinner for myself?”
The guest stars – OK, Josh Groban was HILARIOUS in his guest appearance when he ends up taking advantage of Will’s drunken mother. But what incredible casting to grab up Kristen Chenoweth for a guest spot this past week. Apparently, Eve will be by for a couple episodes as well. I look forward to see what she brings.
The music numbers – They get stuck in your head. And most of the singers are just great. It’s like we get a variety show every week. Presently Kristen Chenoweth’s version of the Heart song “Alone” is on repeat in my head.
Cons:
Matthew Morrison - I absolutely cringe when the teacher starts to bust a move. I thought they were playing it for laughs when he did it in the second episode, (Gold Digger? Shoot me now.), but they’ve been doing it ever since.
Cory Monteith - Finn Riley is starting to grow some depth with the latest pregnancy plotline, but he is so obviously cast from the Chris Klein in American Pie mold that it’s distracting. He even sings like Chris Klein – which is not very good…
Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer - What did Kristen Chenoweth call them when she first came in? The Disunited Colors of Benetton or something like that? The characters are so stereotypically PC: the quiet Asian girl, the sassy overweight black chick, and the gay guy who thinks no one knows. I think the only one that shines above the rest is Chris Colfer as Kurt. And I think that was because of his recent storyline with his dad (played by the guy that always wears a baseball hat, no matter what role or commercial he’s in, Mike O’Malley).
Will and Terri’s marriage – While I found it funny at first, now that she’s pretending to be pregnant, I find myself screaming at the television: “How can you be so blind?” So we’re expected to believe that Terri has her belly wrapped in padding day in, day out? And Will doesn’t suspect a thing? I’m sorry, I’m one part of a married couple, and I can tell you I would have to have been stricken blind not to figure that out. It’s so unbelievable. And now she’s asking Quin for her baby? Come on. I hope this story is killed quick-like.
Kevin McHale - I hope we get more exposition to his character. Otherwise, he’s just the nerdy kid who sings in some numbers, unless there is a ton of dancing involved. If there is, he’s either found playing guitar or serving as a stepstool for Kristen Chenoweth (Really, Glee?). Oh also, I don’t care how evil a bully is, there is no way I believe that any bully would pick on a handicapped kid, much less put him in a dumpster!
Stephen Tobolowsky – Sandy Ryerson is absolutely despicable from the first few minutes of Glee. OK, I love love Stephen Tobolosky (It’s Ned! Ned Ryerson!). But his character is one of those dark comedy elements of Glee that I can’t get behind. But they make such a joke out of the fact that he’s a potential child molester that it’s really a dark smudge on Glee’s sugar sweet scenarios.
The music numbers – When they are bad, they are BAAAAD. Let me reference “Gold Digger” yet again. Also, I might have preferred to hear the kids sing “Single Ladies” rather than spend an episode lip-synching Beyonce. And maybe “Bust Your Windows” would have been better if Mercedes didn’t lose her mind and fall for Kurt suddenly in that episode.
So what do you think, people? Should I stick with it? Or do I just not get Glee?

I for one am a maaasssssive Gleek. I’ve been in love with this show since day one, and the further along it gets, the more I’m loving it.
Sue Sylvester may just be Jane Lynch’s definitive character.
Also I feel that Chris Colfer has a huge career in front of him. He’s clearly a very talented actor, and as the series progresses I feel like we’re going to see mor and more of his character growing.
As for Mercedes and Tina (and Archie especially) being somewhat pushed into the background: Kurt has had his episode, Finn has had his episode, Rachel has had…well every other episode… I’m sure that the time is coming for our other glee kids to grow.
Don’t Stop Believing has been playing nonstop on my iPod ever since it hit YouTube, and every song since has been equally special - the Maybe This Time duet this week with Kristin and Lea was something else!!
Sure some of it is a little forced, and yeah, the kids are all sterotypes of the High School genre of television, but: thats the point. Ryan Murphy is caricaturing the High school genre by intentionally playing on one characteristic of each person and blowing it beyond all proportions.
I’m so glad this show has been picked up for the full 23ep season instead of the initial 13.
Can’t wait to see where it goes!!
I have to agree with Robin the storylines are very one dimensional and disjointed. One Mercedes is Kurt’s bff and the next she is nowhere to be seen when he comes out to his father. I love the concept of the show but the execution just isn’t there yet. I will give it time but I think ultimately it will last two seasons and become a cult favorite but not a hit.
While I enjoy the show a lot, I agree Will and Terri’s marriage is one of the weakest points. Terri has to be the most heinous offender of the “Significant Other of No Redeemable Qualities” since Bradley Cooper in Wedding Crashers. Why is he putting up with her crap when he has a cute girl at work who he clearly has way more chemistry with and is far happier being with? OK yeah he thinks she’s pregnant, but I doubt Terri’s behavior is anything new. Writers need to realize that the SOONRQ can really make the other person look like an idiot more than have us root for the other person to get with their better match.
As for the fake pregnancy thing, yeah it’s ridiculous and there’s no way she could pull it off unless he’s the biggest moron in the world. However, I have to remember this is from the guy who made Nip/Tuck, a show so ridiculous it makes glee look like a documentary.
I really liked the first couple of episodes but it’s losing me quickly. I totally agree about Sue & Emma though. They are the best parts of that show as far as I’m concerned. I just want it to get funny again so I can justify my continued viewing.
Ok, so i think Glee s amazing! I agree with you on most of it, like some of the guess stars! I think the best thing they could have done is get Kristin on their. I also think that sue is that person that you love to hate, the show would be nothing without her. Although on your cons you had the black girl, (not sure of her name) on it. I agree her personality is a little annoying, but her voice is actually AMAZING! When she sang that song from Jennifer Hudson i was completely blown away! So all in all i absolutely love glee!
