Sean @ the Movies: Paranormal Activity, Coco Before Chanel and The Men Who Stare at Goats
The year was 1999, and the world was being taken over by a small little movie called The Blair Witch Project. A film shot like a documentary, that many people left the theater wondering if the movie was real. Most of us knew it wasn’t real, but it was scary anyways. I knew I couldn’t go camping for a while after seeing this movie. So let’s move ahead to 2009, and another small little movie is taking over the world, Paranormal Activity. This low budget movie, only cost $11,000 and has been compared to the Blair Witch Project. Although they never really came out and tried to make it look like this is a real documentary. So the story revolves around a couple, the girl has had a history of weird stuff that has occurred in her life. But they seem to be getting worse, so they buy a camera and decide to record themselves while they sleep to see if they can figure out what is going on. The guy tries to do what he can to protect his girl, but he doesn’t know when to stop. Things get worse and they don’t know what they can do to make it stop. So I won’t ruin anything, so you need to go out and see how this ends on your own. I LOVED this movie, I was so friggin scared after seeing this movie. I jumped a few times and my heart sped up during some of the more intense scenes. This is a horror movie at it’s best. It doesn’t use gore to be scary, it uses simple tactics to scare the audience. You need to go out and see this movie, don’t wait to see it on DVD, it’s a movie that you really need to see in a dark theater with a group of people, the ultimate movie experience. This is going to be another movie in my top movies of the year list at the end of the year. My only concern, they want to make a sequel. Many people have brought this up, but did we not learn anything from Blair Witch 2?!

Fashion and me, for anyone that has ever met me in person knows that I am not very trendy when it comes to fashion. I am happy with a cool T-shirt and pants or shorts. So why did I go see Coco Before Chanel? Well, ever since I saw Amelie, I have been a huge fan of Audrey Tautou. So the movie, shows us Coco as she grows up as an orphan and turns out to be a major force in the fashion industry. During her life, she spends most of her time doing things different from everyone else. She was never into the fancy and uncomfortable designs; she rather be simple and relaxed. It somewhat a typical rags to riches movie that you’ve seen a few times before but with a few surprises thrown in. I would have to say that this is worth seeing, but I would maybe suggest waiting until it is available on DVD, it’s worth at least a rental.

If you were to tell me that there is a movie out there starring Ewan McGregor and George Clooney and that one of them is a Jedi and it’s not Ewan, I would have told you that you are crazy. Well in Men Who Stare at Goats, Ewan stars as a reporter trying to get the big story to prove to his wife (Rebecca Mader, Charlotte from Lost) that he is important. So he heads to the Middle East to find his story. Well, what he finds is an army secret about a group of “jedi” soldiers who fight with their minds. This movie also stars Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey as other members of the secret group. I went into this movie with very little expectations. I saw the trailer and it looked sort of funny. I have to say that leaving the theater after the movie, it was funny and goofy. It was a good story of two guys who believe certain things no matter how crazy or weird others may think about them. This is a weird movie for me to recommend. I would suggest seeing it, but I am still on the fence if it worth going to see in the theater instead of waiting to rent it. If you are a Clooney fan, I am sure you are going to enjoy this movie. And if you were like me and enjoyed the trailer, you should enjoy the movie too. They do a good job and giving you the feel of the movie in the trailer.
