Thank You Sesame Street: Jessica Wagner
This week is the 40th Anniversary of a show almost of all of us grew up on and one of the greatest shows ever Sesame Street. I don’t remember the first time I ever watched it but I do remember what it taught me. Sesame Street helped teach me my ABCs and 123s in both English and Spanish. They taught me colors, shapes, and “One of these things just doesn’t belong here.” Sesame Street always knows how to talk to kids without t
alking down to them.
- The pinball machine that counts to 12.
- The Ladybugs picnic.
- Whenever Grover served the blue bald guy in the restaurant.
- Teeny Little Super Guy
- Anything that Bert and Ernie would do, especially “HEEEERRE FISHY FISHY FISHY”
- Ernie singing ”I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon” is very touching and still makes me tear up.
And so many more.
Of all that Sesame Street gave me in learning it also helped me understand death. When I was 4, my grandfather died shortly followed by the death of my great-grandmother. I remember at that time not understanding death. I remember seeing an episode of Sesame Street sometime after the deaths. It was the episode when the adults explained to Big Bird what happens to those those that die, that they don’t come back. It touched a chord in me back than and I still remember how it made me feel. To this day, I have a special spot in my heart for Sesame Street for explaining such a delicate issue.
Thank you Sesame Street and Jim Henson for everything.
Happy 40th Birthday and here’s to 40 more.
What are your favorite Sesame Street moments?
