Bill Belichick: How Bad Was His Call? : Jay Glatfelter

For any sports fan that watched the Patriots vs. Colts game all the way through last night. You saw what is bound to be the ultimate water cooler sports talk for the rest of the year. With 2 minutes and 8 seconds left in the game at their own 28 yard line on 4th and 2 bill decided that Tom Brady and his Patriots would go for it.

The Good? If they get the first down they win, and is that much to ask from future Hall of Famer Wayne Tom Brady?

The Bad? The “Professor” Peyton Manning has the ball with only 28 yards till the end zone instead of the probable 60 or 70 yards if the Patriots punted the ball.

So to reiterate the title of this post. How bad was the call? I for one think anyway Manning was going to charge back down and win the game. 70 yards, 30 Yards, 2 minutes is an eternity for a QB of Manning’s caliber. What do you guys think? Chris in Boston (#CiB) I’m talking to you!

It was arguably the worst coaching decision in the history of professional sports. I struggle to think of one worse. I don’t care if it was 4th-and-one-millimeter. You punt the ball. Giving Peyton Manning and the Colts 2 entire minutes to score from the 30 yard line is essentially a death warrant. Belichick may put on a stoic front, but somewhere behind that stern visage lies a broken, broken man. He’ll never live it down.

BTW, huge fans of your podcasts.

I love the call this is what champions do, they go for the jugular. These two teams define success by Super Bowls, nothing less. I am tired of conservative coaches who go by the book and never take a chance. This will not stick with the Pats just as it wouldn’t have stuck to the Colts had they made it. We are not talking about teams that are happy to win the November Super Bowl every year like the Chargers or Cowboys these are champions. After the game no one was hiding on the bench under their hood and behind their visor, no one whined about the refs or about the other team celebrating. I was a great game that was made better by a gutsy call and is something the NFL needs more of.

Hahaha Michael why the San Diego hate lol. In all fairness I would say the Chargers have been a December team of late ;)

I think it was one of the worst (and since I hate the Pats BEST) calls I have ever seen. Yeah you win if you can get three yards, but if not there is NO WAY you are going to stop the Colts from the 30. Also, could he have emasculated his defense any more thoroughly? I think not.

I’m thinking Belichick is more upset they used too many timeouts and couldn’t challenge that call. They arguably had the first down. I thought it was one of the gutsiest calls I’ve ever seen. I definitely have more respect for the Pats, even though I really, really wanted to see the Dolts lose. Overall a great game though.

That reply from Colleen was from me, I couldn’t log out lol.

Even if they could have challenged the call I don’t think they could have overturned it. They need without a doubt assurance it was the wrong call, and looking at the replays I couldn’t say for sure either way

  • Michael David said:

@jay you’re right Cowboys are the November champs Chargers are the December champs. I can see the “lights out” dance already, when they make their first round exit. ;)

  • Steve said:

Jay you are probably right, I doubt it would have been overturned, but still worth burning a challenge for if they could. I’ve seen some crazy ones overturned.

My girlfriend is a Colts fan and it’s SO aggravating.. so I tell her things like Peyton won’t play unless he has a bowl of blue M&M’s at every game.. he doesn’t eat them but likes to paint little white horseshoes on them. She at least agrees with me that he runs like a girl.

I didnt think it was a bad call, if he had gotten it (which it sure looked like he did) then no one would have said anything except that it was a great move to keep the ball. Coupled with the horrible PI call before it just tipped the game in the Colts favor, really nothing the Pats could do about it. They played great, just wasnt to be.

Ahh, man. I shut the game off with 4 minutes left, right after NE scored, in favor of the previous night’s SNL. I figured it was over for the Colts and for my football pool until I turned on Sportscenter later in the night. As long as the Ravens come through (and how pathetic would it be if they didn’t?), I’m in line for $40 this week, but I’m still worried.

Other than that, I hate the Pats and I’m glad they lost. I hate Belichick and that was the worst coaching decision I have ever seen in my life (or at least that I remember). Even if they did convert, I think one of the top stories today would be how bad of a decision it was and that he’s lucky they converted. Was he phoning it in, or did Mangini hijack the coaching headset?

  • ChrisInBoston said:

    …it was a bad call.

It was ALSO a first down, but a bad call to put the offense on the field for 4th down.

I’m still physically and emotionally sick from that game, so I’d rather not comment any futher.

that game broke my effing heart.

Would I have made that called? No, but I haven’t had the success that he’s had in the NFL. It would be nice if Belichick was becoming the next Al Davis, but I don’t see that happening for at least another year.

As for people taking jabs at LT. I just don’t care, dude has been nothing but class in San Diego, Name me one thing he’s done off the field that he should be ashamed of? I’m just happy the NFL has a cap, if not he’d be playing for the Yankees.

  • Michael David said:

The following is from Advanced NFL Stats:

“With 2:00 left and the Colts with only one timeout, a successful conversion wins the game for all practical purposes. A 4th and 2 conversion would be successful 60% of the time. Historically, in a situation with 2:00 left and needing a TD to either win or tie, teams get the TD 53% of the time from that field position. The total WP for the 4th down conversion attempt would therefore be:

    (0.60 * 1) + (0.40 * (1-0.53)) = 0.79 WP [win probability]

A punt from the 28 typically nets 38 yards, starting the Colts at their own 34. Teams historically get the TD 30% of the time in that situation. So the punt gives the Pats about a 0.70 WP.”

Didn’t mean to hurt your feelings Jack. I’ll do a “Lights Out” dance in your honor.

Jack would you stop ranting about salary caps and the Yankees? Sheesh, talk about a broken record!

  • Tony said:

Did anyone watch the previous 2 colts posessions? Peyton was on fire!, in the Zone if you will. He would have lead his team from the 28 yrds or 99 yrds. When the greatest player gets that hot you have no chance. I live in Tn and am a long time Crimson Tide fan, I have seen this guy get hot like this before. I hate him but there are times when he can’t be stopped! The pats only hope to win that game was to keep the ball out of Peytons hands. They were 1 yrd away or a replay away from winning that game. The Pats have gone for it on 4th down 16 times against the colts since 2003, they have converted 12 of 16. Not a good call, it was a great call

Come on, really, you couldn’t tell I was just joking around.

It was Bad could have one it but it was terrible. I was still mad about the bs pass interference when I saw this however. Hindsight is 20/20 and i dont have one super-bowl let alone three so I got to believe the man when he says that was the best way to win the game. It is payton manning on the other side of the ball so 70 seems like 30 to him.

  • Sean said:

I am not a Patriots fan at all, but I think he did the right decision. The best way to beat the Colts, it’s very simple, don’t let Manning have the ball, keep him off the field. So it was a risk he took, but it didn’t work out as planned for him

  • Cucumber Jones said:

You know the least effective way to beat the Colts? Giving Manning the ball at your 28!

  • Jack said:

Maybe he should ask the Chargers how you beat Manning and the Colts, but it doesn’t matter, because they can’t beat the Pats or Steelers.
