Sean @ the Movies: Fantastic Mr Fox, Ninja Assassin and Brothers
If you would have told me that Wes Anderson would make a stop motion film, I would have never believed you. Well with Fantastic Mr. Fox he did just that. The story is based on the children’s novel by Roald Dahl, about a family of foxes and their battle with a few local farmers. Mr. Fox was a great thief and after a near death experience and the birth of his child, he decides to quit, but after moving into a new place, the temptation to steal from the local farmers gets the best of him. The farmers then team up together to beat their common enemy. The voice acting for this movie includes George Clooney (Mr Fox), Meryl Streep (Mrs. Fox), Bill Murray (Badger), Jason Schwartzman (Ash Fox) and a few other of the regular Wes Anderson family. This movie just adds to my theory that I could sit and listen to Clooney or Morgan Freeman read the phone book. I think this movie could be OK for kids, but I think this is more of a movie for adults. I went to a free screening of this movie and it seemed like the kids at the showing didn’t respond to the movie. I am going to suggest seeing this movie if you are a Wes Anderson fan, because that is what this is, just not live action. It’s his mix of great music, comedy and cinematography. If you are not a fan, you could still enjoy it, but it might take a little more convincing to enjoy the movie, you may want to wait for the DVD.

Ninja Assassin…do I really need to say more? With a name like that, you know this is going to be a kick ass movie. I mean, it has ninjas and assassins so what could go wrong? Well something is very wrong with this movie, but it has nothing to do with the ninjas or assassins. First up, the movie is directed by James McTeigue, and stars Rain, a popular Japanese musician, who you may remember from Speed Racer. The story, which is the big problem with this movie, is about a female Interpol worker who has been tracking the recent rash of deaths, that she believes has something to do with a secret ninja society. Due to a hit put on her, she is dragged into an all out war between the ninjas and the assassin. See, doesn’t that story sound awesome? But you know what? I guess you don’t go to a movie like this to see a great story, you go to see the awesome action. Which this movie has plenty of. If at any point in time during the movie you get bored, don’t worry, something cool will happen very soon. The action gets pretty wild and sometimes it is hard to figure out what is going on (just imagine a large group of ninjas fighting, you could see why). But one thing that will sort of distract you from the action is the blood. You can tell that it is mostly CG blood, especially the fact that it is so red. It reminds me a lot of the blood red from Sin City or The Spirit. I am going to say go out and see this movie. It’s a fun ride for most of the movie and look at it this way, whenever it goes and tries to tell a story, you can always use that as a chance to go to the bathroom or go get some more food or drinks.

So I just want to start off this review of Brothers with this statement: I was excited to see this movie after seeing the trailer, but after I saw this movie, I realized I pretty much saw a recap of the whole movie in the trailer. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Toby Maguire and Natalie Portman. Toby is a military man who is married to Natalie. They have 2 girls. Jake is the brother who has made some mistakes in his life and recently got out of prison. Well Toby is about to leave for the Middle East, and as I stated earlier, you know what happens next due to the trailer. Watching this movie, you see a lot of crying and emotion. I am not sure why, but I really never felt anything for these people. You know that he doesn’t die and he comes back, so any crying when he “dies,” I didn’t care. I am not sure if that looks bad on my part or what. There are a few sort-of surprises to this movie, one I saw coming a mile away. I was sort of put off by the fact that the movie portrays a soldier coming back from war and acting crazy and out of control. Is that something we really need to see again in a movie? I think we get enough of that in the news. So I would say that if you haven’t seen the trailer for the movie, you may enjoy it. But if you have, I am going to recommend skipping this movie and wait to see it on DVD. I am sure you will be able to find out what happens from word of mouth. Like I said, I really wanted to like this movie but I am going to put this in my list of disappointing movies for the year.

Well that is all for this review. I’m looking forward to seeing Up in the Air this week. Going to wait on Avatar, not too excited about seeing it, but I will just to check out all of the hype surrounding it.
So until next time, go out and see a movie
