Big Butts Are Healthy: James Gordon

13 January 2010 3 Comments

Scientists at Oxford University have this week announced a paper detailing that having relatively high levels of fat in your hips, butt and thighs can actually be healthy for you.

In a world where much of (ok, all of) our mainstream media is so image obsessed, with size zero seemingly being the definition of beauty nowadays (not saying I agree, far from it, but you know, it’s the generally held opinion) this research could finally bring something new to the debate.

jennifer-lopez-buttThe research shows that extra fat around the hips and thighs can actually help to protect against various cardiovascular and metabolic diseases including diabetes – although fat around the waistline gives no such protection.

Lead researcher Dr. Konstantinos Manolopoulos, said: “It is shape that matters and where the fat gathers.  “Fat around the hips and thighs is good for you but around the tummy is bad.

Now of course it should be prefaced by saying: its hard to get one without the other, we all know that, but hopefully this will mean that regular people, who eat right and exercise regularly, but just can’t lose those pounds to get right down to the stickinsect’s they see in magazines, will rest easy, knowing that ultimately those few pounds on the butt are actually doing them a world of good.

There you have it: Yes your butt looks big in that dress, and because of it you don’t have diabetes (and you still look amazingly beautiful too!)

Interesting. I suppose this can partly account for the gender discrepancy when it comes to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Men tend to be more susceptible to these diseases than women are. Men tend to accumulate fat in the abdomen, whereas women tend to accumulate fat in the hips and butt.

This is the most delicious yublog post ever.

Seriously, it’s just more evidence that you do not need to look like a skeleton to be healthy. Eat well and exercise (preferably in skin tight pants if you have booty)… Sorry couldn’t resist.
