Sean @ the Movies: “The Road” and “Orphan”

29 January 2010 No Comment

Hello everyone, I am back and ready to give you another set of reviews for your reading pleasure.  We are going to give you a fairly new movie and the other will be one you can check out on DVD.

the-road-movie-posterSo first up, we have The Road directed by John Hillcoat and stars Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron. It is based on the novel written by Cormac McCarthy, which I haven’t read, so I am strictly basing this review on the film version.  It’s a film about a father and his son as they try to survive after some event that wiped out most of the population.  They don’t get into any sort of back story as to what happens, so you can try and figure out your own theory.  This is not a happy movie in any sense.  You cannot feel good about life after seeing the hardships these two go through, trying to find food and keeping safe.  Just as you think things are going to look up for them, their good luck turns bad.  After seeing how dirty everything was in this movie, it makes you want to just go home and take a long, hot shower.  I have to say that this movie really feels like the middle movie in a trilogy, like there should be a movie before explaining what caused this and then another to let you know what happens after the end of the movie.  Would I suggest you see this movie, maybe, if you have read the book you may enjoy it more because I am sure they go more into great details about some of the missing story.  Do not see this movie if you are having a bad day, or if you just got done watching Dear Zachery, stay away from this movie.  Zachery and this movie may be way too depressing of a double feature for anyone.

orphanposterNext up, we have Orphan, which you can find on DVD at this time.  This movie is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, which stars Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard as parents who are looking to adopt a child, Esther, played by Isabelle Fuhrman.  Things start off great as she becomes a member of the family, but then things start to go terribly wrong.  Very bad things happen and cause the mom to start going crazy as she tries to get everyone to believe her that their new child is not as sweet and innocent as she seems.  The story is somewhat something you have seen before, but I really think the payoff at the end (more on that later), makes it worth seeing.  This was actually a pretty good movie, another movie that just really makes you not wanna have kids.  Apparently most of Hollywood doesn’t want us to have kids, cause they love to make movies with evil, scary kids.  Now some of you may know there is a twist in this movie, and believe me, it’s something that you are not expecting, so if someone has spoiled this movie for you, you will not enjoy this movie at all. This is a movie you need to rent, it’s worth the rental, not sure if it is worth buying, not sure if multiple viewings are still worth it.

So there you go, another batch of reviews for you to enjoy. I will have another set out for you in the next few days. Haven’t really seen anything new lately, but I hope to catch a few newer movies this week maybe.

So until next time, go out and see a movie, or rent one is just as good.
