So we know that John Locke isn’t exactly John Locke anymore.  We also know that bodies are being “claimed” by something or someone on the Island.  What does this have to do with “The Substitute”?  Time to find out.  Leave all your feedback here: Questions, comments, and/or theories, of course!

    John Locke getting married!?

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

Locke and Helen getting married, and Locke’s father is invited? Hmm…

  • Will said:

When she said “caterers”, I misread that on the closed-captioning as “catheters”.

  • NaysWay said:

Did she just say “my parents… and YOUR DAD”?!

  • Paul said:

So if Locke’s Dad is invited to the wedding do we assume that he didn’t push Locke out of a window in this timeline? That Locke lost use of his legs another way?

Smokey POV flight over The Island is cool.

I was spoiled a few months ago that Katey Segal was going to be on this season because I was looking at her IMDB, because she is also on Sons of Anarchy. It sucks I was spoiled, but I’m so glad to see her, she is an amazing actress.

I like Season 3-4 Richard better

    Nice Smokey POV shot.

I’m not reading the comments but since I’m in London & can’t watch this episode live with the rest of you east-coasters, Chris in Boston is going to take my place moderating the comments. Okay eliminating temptation and I cannot wait to catch up!!

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

So does this mean Locke really went on the Walkabout?

  • Jessica aka jlyn1980 said:

Thank you Colleen and Boston for setting this up, I was getting antsy not being able to talk about Lost till now. Have more fun in London.

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

Thanks for setting it up, Colleen. Enjoy the rest of your London trip!

do you think we’ll be getting ilana’s backstory?

  • Jessica aka jlyn1980 said:

    Ben really should stop lying.

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

Since Jacob’s body turned into the ash that protects people from Smokey, that obv means he’s been reincarnated numerous times. Was Locke a candidate to “become” Jacob or replace Richard?

  • Bob said:

Blond bloody kid = baby Jacob?

  • Laura said:

I still can’t decide if Flocke is bad or good and if Jacob was good or bad. Notice how Ben continued his lying ways with Ilana?!

  • ManilaRaf said:

Wow. So who wrote the names? MIL or Jacob?

Jacob because of the “bringing them here” comment form last year?

  • Brad said:

    YES!!!!!!! It shall be explained!

  • CoryToday said:

The cliffhanger technically already happened. Literally.

  • Vradi said:

Isn’t Ben kinda dressed like in the photo Miles had when the freighties first got to the island?

  • ManilaRaf said:

MIL: “He’s not the only one”

Only person with numbers or not the only Shepherd?

  • NaysWay said:

    OMG THE NUMBERS! THANK GOD!!!!

  • CoryToday said:

    The numbers. Nice.

  • Jeremy in Mississippi said:

    What’s Kate’s number

  • Jessica aka jlyn1980 said:

    Kate is not on there.

  • Yasmin said:

    What about Kate?

  • Laura said:

    Where’s Kate’s number?

  • ManilaRaf said:

Candidate? So does Frank have a number?

  • Becky said:

    #’s

    James 15
    Shepard 23
    Hugo 6
    Locke 4

    Etc..

  • ManilaRaf said:

Sounds like the Locke who began doubting the numbers & entering them into the Swan computer.

    Same 3 choices too.

  • Jeremy in Mississippi said:

Jacob seems more and more like a bad guy for wasting these people’s lives

  • CoryToday said:

    BOOM.

  • ManilaRaf said:

Time for questions is over my ass.

  • Banhammer said:

    WOW.

    So what’s the deal?

    Is Jacob the bad guy?

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

    Thud

  • Jessica aka jlyn1980 said:

“LOST” in white is the worst 4 letters in the world. I want more.

  • NaysWay said:

I expected that episode to be much more climactic. I mean, the numbers. Nice. But… I don’t know. More, maybe?

  • noelle said:

so we got a nice little dialogue with the lockeness monster and sawyer- but can we believe any of it??

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

So based on what Smokey said to Sawyer, Jacob is bad. But who to trust? Its like Ben vs Widmore all over again.

  • Becky said:

Ok… Hurry JayandJack.. do the podcast.. I wanna know what R-85 Ed “Gunz’s Hochuli has donated to your Autism Speaks Auction….. LOL!!!

So I can bid & add to my Collection…. Hopefully!!!!

2 answers and 140 more questions.

  • M.G. said:

Kate wasn’t on the wall? i would have thought that she would be up there, instead of Locke. all in all, great episode!

  • ManilaRaf said:

What does MIL need in order to “go home”?

  • Banhammer said:

what about the little blond kid?

    Who was he??????

  • Jessica said:

Nice Bob, lol. Where was “Austen” and her number? Also, who was that boy?

  • mbwbrian said:

    Numbers finally - woohoo!!!!!!

  • Ellie said:

So who did Jacob touch at Sun and Jin’s wedding? Did he touch both? Since MIL said only one was a candidate. Oh the numbers…so were the others that came just collateral damage? Or did maybe MIL bring them?

  • Jana said:

I was pleading with them “Please don’t end there”, but they didn’t listen.

  • mbwbrian said:

What are your thoughts on this - two teams Jack and the gang vs Sawyer, MIL and?????

  • Jeremy in Mississippi said:

I nominate Hurley and Miles to protect the island…they would get along so much better than Jacob and MIL

  • Erik said:

I have absolutely no words to describe this episode right now. That was just intense. The cameos by Ben and Hugo (no Hurley?) were great. It’s showing that some people are doing just fine in this reality (vs the theory that everybody’s life would be better ON the island).

I think any hopes I had of Locke being resurrected were “buried” with this episode though.

That, and now I have to worry about Jin/Sun again.. will only one of them survive?

  • Ashley (author) said:

Ooh…15 Ford 16 Jarrah, and I saw Reyes, too!!!

  • ManilaRaf said:

I’m interested if there’s anyone we know in the series of crossed names.

  • mbwbrian said:

Still trying to process this epidsode. Carlton Tweeted today not to miss the episode tonight because “a NUMBER of things will be illuminated” - guess now i see what he meant. Nice clue it was.

How many of our lostees will be crossed off the list before the season ends?

  • ManilaRaf said:

Okay, so how does the loophole that allowed MIL to take over Locke work?

Did he kill off Jacob’s prime candidate?

Does this put Alpert’s earlier visit to Locke as a child in another perspective? Was he scouting out young Locke’s suitability as a candidate?

  • crazycatlady said:

I think the blond kid is Jacob. Because Richard couldn’t see him, but MIL and Sawyer could. Sawyer could see him because he’s a cantidate.

  • Jeremy in Mississippi said:

Noticed Kate had no number…just another reference to how pointless she is

  • ManilaRaf said:

I’m scared to think that all those names were crossed out due to actions by MIL. If that’s the case, Sawyer better be careful.

  • Kate said:

So Kate is not a number…

    4 - Locke (crossed out)
    8 - Reyes
    15 - Ford
    16 - Jarrah
    23 - Shepard
42 - Kwon (either Sun or Jin)

  • Gozer33 said:

would Ben still be “evil” as a teacher? Did he still go to the temple as a kid? Or would Sayid never have been in 1977 in that timeline?? Paradoxy!

  • 50 said:

    4 Locke, 8 Hurley, 15 Ford, 16 Said, 23 Shephard, 42 Kwon ?

  • Kate said:

And i guess Frank is not a candidate :( Love him.

  • Gozer33 said:

Oh and I’m pretty sure blonde kid is Aaron. He’s special.

  • M.G. said:

NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY THE NUMBERS ARE CURSED - THEY BROUGHT THE PEOPLE TO THE ISLAND

    8 - Reyes
    15 - Ford
    16 - Jarrah
    23 - Shepard
42 - Kwon (either Sun or Jin)”

I wonder what this all means…. like always

  • Jessica aka jlyn1980 said:

Crackpot Theory=Adam and Eve=Kate and Lapidis=they are not on the wall with a number.

  • Jeremy in Mississippi said:

Jacob gave them numbers like they were on some kind of team…guess he couldn’t afford the jerseys

  • Matt in Syracuse said:

Too tired to theorize tonight. Going to rewatch tomorrow and then contemplate.

  • Eric (esbrown) said:

i saw one that said 289-Jones

  • Eric (esbrown) said:

I can’t wait to read all the other names on the wall/ceiling.

  • Banhammer said:

I love how they didn’t really answer the question about the numbers. like…where did the order of the names and numbers come from? bastards!

  • ManilaRaf said:

What if Adam and Eve aren’t time shifters, time travelers? They were just candidates who didn’t pan out. Like Locke (RIP) or those others who were crossed out. Weren’t they found with the black and white stones?

  • Anita from Rome said:

OKAY THE BLOND KID IS EITHER JACOB, AARON, CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD OR SOMEONE ELSE, BUT I THINK IT’S TOO LATE TO BRING IN A TOTALLY NEW FIGURE…I DON’T KNOW THIS SHOW IS MESSING WITH MY MIND

  • Marc Vibbert said:

to quote Ed Helms in “The Hangover” - “what the f**k is going on?

  • Molly said:

I texted my husband five minutes into the episode “Randy is such a douche.” Me and Hugo = mind meld.

Is it just me, or did Jacob’s body disappear unnaturally quickly/cleanly in the fire? There seems to be nothing at all left, but it has been, what, maybe 12 hours, in a relatively small bonfire?

Also, the ladder on the cliff = “Jacob’s ladder” = Biblical reference?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob%27s_Ladder

  • lgabriel said:

Aaron = creepy demon child = Jacob??????

  • ManilaRaf said:

@Molly. Good catch. So in this case, are we to assume that instead of climbing Jacob’s ladder, we’re descending Jacob’s ladder and what that may imply?

And I wonder if the writers were foreshadowing how they’d end the episode when you have those two hanging from a cliff? Ha.

  • Banhammer said:

    I wonder if Aaron had a #number

  • Jeremy in Mississippi said:

CRACKPOT THEORY - #42 Kwon = Ji Yeon

  • Kate said:

    @Jeremy in Mississippi

    YES!!

  • Gayle said:

What about if Jacob is like VOldemort in harry potter when he touches someone he leaves his mark like Voldemort leaves his pensive and Locke needs to kill all the pensives/ people to finally kill Jacob and be free of his hold that the island has on him and be free of the world and that is why people like Christian Shepard are dead becuase they were old island keepers and slowly but surely have died becuase of this bound to the island. OMG I think I figured it out. As Jay and jack say that is my crack pot theory and I am sticking to it!

  • Anita from Rome said:

Okay, so the numbers may not just refer to the men.

    4 - Locke (crossed out)
    8 - Reyes
    15 - Ford
    16 - Jarrah
23 - Shepard (Could be Jack, CHRISTIAN OR CLAIRE)
42 - Kwon (Could be either Sun or Jin)

I think that would be pretty interesting if it wasn’t just men…or maybe that’s why women die on the island, because the true leader is meant to be a man?

  • ManilaRaf said:

Theory: What if Shepard #23 is Claire?

Locke = Dead, out of the way
Sayid = Supposed to be dead
    Claire = ????

  • Banhammer said:

I really like the idea that Kwon could be Jin…Sun…………………..

    or Ji Yeon!

  • ManilaRaf said:

I’m having trouble with Reyes & Jarrah being on the list of numbers.

Didn’t Jacob visit those two after they’d already been to and left the island as part of the Oceanic Six?

  • lgabriel said:

Seeing Richard with cuts and bruises was like seeing Jack without tears in his eyes…. It doesn’t happen often

  • Andy said:

    So… weren’t the Kwon’s expecting? Hehe… Another candidate, no?

  • Skelly said:

Crackpot theory… Kate wasn’t missing from the numbers on the wall.
23 - Shepard (kate?) love triangle solved?

  • Joel said:

These are names my wife and I saw and recognized besides the obvious: 313 Littleton, 761 Faraday, and Goodspeed with no number

  • Banhammer said:

    Skelly!!! NICE CATCH!!!!!!

  • Banhammer said:

Can anyone find a screen cap for those names?????????????????????????????????

  • Michael said:

So if Kwon could be Ji Yeon couldn’t Sheppard be Aaron as well?

  • Marc Vibbert said:

Also I saw Troupe on the wall in Jacob’s Cave (Gary Troupe? The man who got sucked into the turbine)

  • Robin said:

I love how in the Sideways world, we are just adding up the people who want to help Locke:

    1. Jack
    2. Hurley
    3. Rose

I can see a trend starting, but how does that reflect on what’s happening on the Island?

  • lgabriel said:

I wonder if Jacob gave himself a number? lol… 108 perhaps? hehe

  • Banhammer said:

    Michael, totally dude.

Man in Locke got his first recruit (Sawyer). Will he have to recruit the entire Oceanic crowd to get home like locke did to get back to island?

So here are a couple things that my wife and I were thinking.

Jacob and MIL are playing God and the Devil. MIL is acting like the serpent in the Garden of Good and Evil promising all of the answers. Jacob like Jesus had his body ascend after his death, thus no body left behind. Illana coming into the tomb to cry over Jabobs death is very similar to Mary Magdelne coming to the tomb of Jesus after his death. Richard is playing the part of Moses — speaks to God and shares his laws with the people.

On a separate thought. If the flash sideways are connected to the Island story line. Will actions in the flashes(2004) after the Losties on the Island? I think it could be like when Desmond consiousness traveled and he gained knowledge in the future from things he did in the past during his flashes. Don’t know how this will play out, but it could explain Kate on island trying to focus on finding Claire after spending all of that time helping her in the flash.

Great episode and more questions again

  • Tammy said:

I posted this idea on the Transmission also…

So … The NUMBERS! OMG – the numbers = our Losties. Jacob must’ve made that list eons ago and that’s why lists are so important. So anyone get screenshots yet, who is 4,8,15,16,23,42 exactly? 6 numbers. Oceanic 6. So Kate and Aaron are a number too? Ironic that all those guys would end up on the island together.

My crackpot theory of the week? UnLocke will wage war against Jacob’s crew. The end result will catapult our Losties back into another “loop” of time and course correct. Making the “flash sideways” segments what happens after the last “thud” of LOST on the island.

    :)

I like the ep., but I don’t like them cutting so many chars. out entirely. Not enough episodes left for that. In the past, even when eps. mainly focused on certain chars./storylines, they still checked in with the others ones as well. This week, not whatsoever. Don’t like that. But I s’pose it saves $.

On the other hand, I don’t like the temple plot/set, Dogen, etc. at all either. So it’s kind of a wash.

They’re *really* pushing the Biblical stuff. Jacob’s Ladder, Aaron, a dark side and a light side, heavy redemption theme, resurrection/living forever (Eden–before the fall), emphasis on the role of free will.

My current theory is the Island is a new attempt at Eden. Jacob plays the role of Adam. MIB is Satan–the tempting serpent. God gave humans free will, hence the “rules”–humans can choose to sin and go to Hell or be redeemed, but cannot be arbitrarily sent to Heaven or Hell because of the gift of free will.

Still, some things don’t make sense… MIB claims to have been “a man” like Sawyer (could be lying, I guess). Not sure what the deal is with the kid. Time travel is random. Hm.

  • Ellie said:

So maybe the repeating of the numbers (what Hurley’s institutionalized friend-forgot his name) came from him hearing Jacob repeating them? Those are the last numbers he has to bring to the island…everyone else is crossed off it seems…So do we think Jacob wrote all the names in number order at on time scattered around the cave? Or assigned each person a number based off of something?

What a filler episode! Probably one of the most boring ever, and worst of this season. Nothing interesting happened, no mysteries revealed, too much emphasis on “Locke” and the “Smoke Monster”, and who really cares about the numbers??

Where was all the interesting stuff? Like Kate, how she loves Sawyer, what she does next in her Alt-Reality. It seemed like this episode really steered away from the real meat and most important question of all - what is Kate going to do next.

I for one am sorely disappointment and my faith in the show has diminished. I think the writers need to pay more close attention to how shows like NCSI are written or they risk tarnishing the reputation of the show.

    More Kate-centric episodes please!

    jk :) Best episode ever.

    Ummm WTF?!?!?!?!

That last scene blew my brain to smithereens.

The Numbers are the candidates!! Who do we think the Kwon is? Jin or Sun? or (slightly off the left field) Ji Yeon maybe? Just throwing that out there.

And which of the remaining 5 candidates will take the job? Its gotta be Jack right? Jack vs Locke for the climactic battle for the Island. That just kinda fits.

And: Who is the kid??? “You know the rules”. yeah, but WE DON’T!!! EXPLAIN!!!

Gah this episode raised more questions than it answered for real!!

  • Colleen (author) said:

Aaahhh I watched it this morning and holy crap. I guess Sawyer and Jack are poised to become the next MIL/Jacob after all and if the Numbers represent each candidate, then what exactly do the numbers chosen for them MEAN? What are the rules?! I wanna know who that kid was, too.

I like Sideways Helen a whole lot better…and if she mentioned invited Locke’s father to their wedding, I took it to mean that something not-being pushed out a window caused Locke to be in the wheelchair.

Nice uses of “Don’t tell me what I can’t do.” Finally (for now), loved the double meaning of the “Substitute”

I’ve had quite the busy morning and haven’t been able to read all of these posts as I usually do on Wednesdays, but I’ll get to them later.

For now, I just want to say this to get it out of my mind and into a concrete form:

I can’t believe I didn’t realize this before last night’s episode. This second timeline is essentially how our losties would have lived (or I should say, “are living”) if Jacob had never been in their lives. And I’m really starting to side with MIL now.

You see how happy everyone is without Jacob having pushed them? No numbers, Hugo is happy and lucky. Ben isn’t a monster, he’s a seemingly kind teacher. Locke is still paralyzed, and he has bad days, but overall you can see that he’s happy with Helen and his life (and presumably his father, who didn’t try to kill him or steal his kidney). If he hadn’t intervened with Kate and bought that lunchbox for her, I’m going to guess her friend (Thomas, was it?) is never going to end up dead. Granted, she’s still a fugitive, but I have a feeling we’re going to find out she’s happier in this life. If Sawyer hadn’t had a pen, he wouldn’t have finished that letter, and he would have never lived his life acting as Sawyer, the con man. Maybe the real Sawyer isn’t even a con man, thus why Locke is close with him and maybe James’ dad never killed his wife. Nadia wouldn’t have gotten hit by a car, and maybe Sayid could have found her sooner than he did in the original timeline. I’ll bet Claire will keep Aaron and she’ll be happier than dirty, gun-wielding Claire. I don’t know how Jack is affected yet, but I’m sure we’ll find out about it next week.

I don’t think Jacob is an evil man, but he certainly is manipulative and he seems to care about people much less than MIL does, even if MIL is just putting on a front for his own benefit. Point is, without Jacob’s intervening, there is a LOT that would be different. And it seems to me, at least thus far, that everyone would have been much better off without Jacob.

  • Colleen (author) said:

I was thinking that it’s odd how we all thought that their off-Island lives would be so terrible based on what we knew about them from the first go-around and turns out that a lot of them have better lives in the Sideways than they did in the reality that Jacob touched them in…

Ok, this is a very loose theory, and it sort of hinges on my rough memory of the Ajira crash, so if I’m wrong someone can shoot me down.

Alot has been said about how the boy might be Aaron from the future, or grown up Aaron in some form at any rate, and the debate on this of course is at what point Aaron travels in time or whatever he does.

    What if he doesn’t.

When Ajira crashed, what we saw was the plane getting near to the location of the Island, the flash that sent the 77ers flying through time and then the crash. We all assumed the crash was just 2007 and that the crash didnt affect the rest of the Ajira gang, but what if the plane jumped as well, just forward not back. What if this is actually say…2020 or something - a good amount of time after.

Aaron, who we last saw with Mama Littleton, is brought to the Island by the Others - maybe Christian goes to her, shows her that he is still alive and convinces her to come to the Island, in 2007. Aaron grows up on the Island, being raised in the presence of Jacob to know the rules, and taught to harness the powers of the Island to enforce them.

Flashforward to the Ajira crash, 2020 (I’m making this date up, but you get the idea), Aaron is now 16, about the right age for the boy, and has spent his entire life training to be the judge of the Island.

Something that I think might help this out: last week the line about “The french lady has been dead for years.” it just didnt sit right for me. Yeah ok its been 3 years, but I donno… 3 years is like “a few years”, whereas “dead for years” implies to me at least A LONG TIME.

I donno, and like I say its weak (I don’t remember for absolutely certain if we were ever given straight up undeniable confirmation that the events we’re seeing now are 2007 or not or if its possible the plane jumped too)

  • James said:

Dang it…just remembered the kids from 815 are still young. Dang it Zach and Emma…

I’m listening to Jorge & Beth’s Geronimo Jack’s Beard podcast for this episode and Beth brings up a point I hadn’t thought of.

Anthony Cooper is on good terms with his son, John Locke.

So, obviously, Locke probably didn’t become paralyzed from the waist down due to Cooper pushing him out a window.

And she brought up the possibility that if Cooper is a good man (not a conman), perhaps Sawyer never lost his parents and never became a conman.

Great minds think alike apparently. My post 5 above yours says the same thing.

  • Colleen (author) said:

@ManilaRaf - That’s what I said in my earlier post, that they’re on good terms so what does that mean for Locke’s condition? For one, it says he was always “destined” to be in a wheelchair, which is interesting, or else Helen & Cooper are still jerks in the Sideways and secretly plotting to con Locke, just from a different angle. I hope it’s not that though.

When I saw the scene of the black and white rocks on the scale, I automatically thought about the Black Rock ship. Since there is a vehicle named the Black Rock, perhaps there’s a vehicle that represents the “white rock” Could that be the airplane that the Losties came to the island on?

And when I saw the name of Kwon on the rock wall, it could also be Sun and Jin’s kid. Just a thought. Love the show.

I just re-watched “The Substitute’. Here’s some notes:
    - Locke loves water - island rain or sprinklers.
    - Locke picked the lighter color fabric 1st.
    - Jacobs ashes are white.
    - Iggy Pop “search and destroy” is a great recruitment song.
    - Locke steals office supplies (the blank pad Hugo grabs to write for a phone number).
    - The delivery guy sounds like Ben?
    - A lot of use of the word “hell” - “get the hell off this island” “hell yes”.
