Well…that’s that then….The Oscars 2010: James Gordon

3 and a-half-hours of the Oscars - 4 including the red carpet pre-coverage - and I honestly feel like I could have not bothered - I gained absolutely nothing from it. Not one of the results was the slightest bit surprising - I could have written that winners list a month ago and saved us all a lot of bother.

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin…wow…has their even been a double act with less combined stage presence? Their opening duologue was almost painful, and despite them loosening up as the evening went on, it was all a little too little too late. I wish Robert Downey Jr. - who was funny as always - or Neil Patrick Harris - saviour of the Emmys - had stepped in…

Sean @ the Movies: Fantastic Mr Fox, Ninja Assassin and Brothers

If you would have told me that Wes Anderson would make a stop motion film, I would have never believed you. Well with Fantastic Mr. Fox he did just that.  The story is based on the children’s novel by Roald Dahl, about a family of foxes and their battle with a few local farmers. Mr. Fox was a great thief and after a near death experience and the birth of his child, he decides to quit, but after moving into a new place, the temptation to steal from the local farmers gets the best of him. The farmers then team up together to beat their common enemy. The voice acting for this movie includes George Clooney (Mr Fox), Meryl Streep (Mrs. Fox), Bill Murray (Badger),…

Thoughts on President Obama’s Decision on Afghanistan & Iraq: Michael Kirschner

This is in response to President Obama’s recent decision to send 30,000 more troops into Afghanistan, while at the same time reiterating the fact that Iraq was and still is the long war and there is a need to pull out to refocus in Afghanistan, which according to the President is the right war. The decision to escalate any war is controversial and this one is no different, even members of President Obama’s own party are divided on the issue. I would like to ask my readers what you think on the issue, elaboration in the comments section is recommended.

MLB World Series 2009: The Evil Empire is Back : Michael David

So the evil Yankees are back in the World Series and the debate about large market dominance in baseball has fired up again. Living between NY and Philly I have seen both sides of the issue. Until the last 5 - 7 years, the Phillies pretended to be a small market franchise and of course the Yankees are the bully many people love to hate. Personally, I think this is one of the best, most competitive eras of baseball and that a salary cap would ruin the game like it has ruined the NBA and NHL.  I would also argue that the NFL is not better because of the cap but the popularity of the sport itself overruns any detriment the cap may cause.…

LOST Discussion: The Hieroglyphs on the Season 6 Poster Translated

By now, you’ve probably seen the Popular Mechanics article where Dr. James Allen, Wilbour Professor of Egyptology and Chair of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies at Brown University decoded the hieroglyphics on the new Lost season 6 poster.  According to Dr. Allen, “The hieroglyphs spell out two Egyptian words, meaning ‘Who is the guide?’ or ‘Who is the leader?’”

So this week’s discussion is this: What interpretation do you have for that translation?  Who do you think is the ‘guide’ or ‘leader’?  Jacob?  Not-Locke?  Locke?  Jack?  Ben?  Richard Alpert (we’ve been on Team Alpert-is-Really-Jacob since it first went around back in May 2009)?  Let us know in the comments below.  Let’s get some discussion going!

Here’s the poster:
